The Feminine Breath

The Arabic root for breath and soul is grammatically feminine. The root for God's mercy means womb. The first breath of every newborn contains the Name.

The soul is breath. The self is that which breathes. What makes a being precious and alive derives from the same root as air moving through lungs.

Hebrew
נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh) — same root, same semantic range. The breath-soul God breathed into clay in Genesis 2:7. Grammatically feminine in Hebrew. The Septuagint translates it as ψυχή (psyche) — the word we still use for the study of the soul.

Surah 4:1
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا
"O humanity, be conscious of your Lord who created you
from a single nafs, and created from her, her mate..."
نَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ
nafsin wāḥidatin — "a single nafs." Both words are feminine. The masculine adjective would be وَاحِد. The text uses the feminine form وَاحِدَة.
مِنْهَا
minhā — "from her." Feminine singular pronoun. Masculine would be مِنْهُ (minhu). The text says her.
زَوْجَهَا
zawjahā — "her mate." Feminine possessive suffix ـهَا. The pair-member belongs to her.

No masculine pronoun is used. The word "Adam" does not appear. The word "rib" does not appear. The source of all creation is called nafs — breath-soul — and every grammatical marker points the same direction: her.

Hebrew parallel
Genesis 1:2 — וְר֣וּחַ אֱלֹהִ֔ים (v'ruach Elohim) — "and the breath/spirit of God." The word רוּחַ (ruach) — breath, wind, spirit — is grammatically feminine in Hebrew. The Spirit that moves over the waters at the beginning of creation is she.

The attribute Muslims invoke more than any other — the one that frames every act of worship, every surah recited, every prayer begun — derives from womb. The Most Merciful is, at root, the Most Womb-Like: the source that holds, nourishes, contains, and brings forth.

רֶחֶם (rechem) — womb. רַחֲמִים (rachamim) — mercy, compassion. Identical root. Identical derivation. In both languages, the word for divine mercy and the word for the organ that holds life before birth are the same word.

Two roots. One phrase:

الرَّحْمٰن
al-Raḥmān — the All-Merciful. From the root ر-ح-م that means womb.

The Breath of the Womb. The exhale of the source that holds everything. Creation as an act of breathing — the soul-breath emerging from the womb-mercy into existence.
